Autoclaving is the process of sterilizing supplies and equipment with the use of high pressure that is saturated at 250°F (121°C) for about 15 minutes. According to a Food and Drug Administration commentary, autoclaving is the most effective way to sterilize tools in order to eradicate all forms of bacteria and blood-borne disease ( such as hepatitis). Hospitals are required to dispose of tools after each use and to autoclave the tools which are used on multiple patients. However, it is important to note that an autoclave is not the same as the blue ultra violet light machine that is seen in many salons.
